Believe them – without judgement. Accept how they are, without feeling the need to tell them how ‘exercising or getting out a bit will make things much better’ We understand you’re trying to help, but it’s important to remember that whilst It may help some; others find any form of exercise too difficult. One of the hardest things for a person to have to deal with, is the feeling of judgement of others. Knowing that others simply don’t believe you can bring shame and guilt. This can become all consuming. Our mental well-being – already under huge pressure from dealing with losing ourselves to the condition, can become so damaged by these feelings. To support them, be clear in your understanding – learn about the condition. Accept that they may be a different person for a while. They may not be able to do all of the things that they used to be able to. This condition does improve for many – there is always hope; but time, understanding and trust in them can also help so much! |
